Jo Ann’s Garden

To give the people a three-day weekend, my birthday is observed on the third Monday of July.

Jo Ann lives at the edge of Petaluma in a little house on a very large lot, and she’s put in a marvelous garden, a mixture of decorative and edible plants.

Since the decorative ones are, ummm, better looking, i’ll focus on those.

Matte, happy birthday! Beautiful flowers and pictures! You have brightened my day. 🙂 I have just a few plants myself, but one of them is a fuchsia, a gift, hanging on my front porch. As we are now in summer and that spot gets a lot of sunlight, I’ve become conditioned to watering it daily. (My indoor plants are less needy…) That’s fine, I like taking care of it. 🙂

Thanks. I was living in the city when the great fuchsia blight swept through and killed all the spectacular decades-old doubles in my garden. Fortunately, the little original fuchsias are resistant to that blight, so many people still have them. Glad you do.

Stunning photos, Matte! And boy, what a garden Jo Ann has. Congrats on the pix. Chose the best one and post it on Facebook.

She’s very talented as you see, and every visit is enhanced by the garden.

Terrific essay, and the pictures are pretty damned fine too.

Snydley! Haven’t heard from you in ages. Been in a bit of a slump of late so not much writing, but delighted you like the pics.

Great shots of that beautiful garden…Louis, do we almost have the same birthday? Mine’s July 18th… Miss you in the city, but glad you are making the most of the countryside.

I hardly did justice to the garden and didn’t even try to provide the names of all the plants. I haven’t done a post on this news yet since i want to wait until everything’s definite, but i’ve reached the top of the waiting list for the old folks home on Coleridge Street and will be moving back to the city this fall or early winter.

Feels rather strange to be writing about a major turning point in my life in the comments to one of my posts, but i just learned a few minutes ago that while there is an apartment at Coleridge coming up later this month, it’s on the second floor and is significantly smaller than the one i’d seen and been hoping for. It being smaller i can cope with, but it being on the second floor means a continuing hassle getting to and from it since the elevator is small. The combination of those two negative factors makes me think of just postponing my move until the next opening. Gotta think about this.
