The only sport i follow avidly is tennis, but that doesn’t stop me from browsing around in the sports page every day, and in the past year or so i’ve kept coming across the phrase “hat trick”, always in the context of an athlete having performed extraordinarily well.
But still, i couldn’t really tell what it actually meant, so i Googled and instantly had the answer: a hat trick is “when a bowler dismisses three batsmen with consecutive deliveries.” Of course. Shoulda figured it out for myself. The third dismissed batsman must give his hat to the bowler, who then sticks it in his wicket.
